Reading Theatre: Steel Magnolias

Join us on April 22 for a reading of Robert Harling’s Steel Magnolias, which follows six remarkable women as they come together in moments of joy and sorrow, sharing laughter, resilience, and enduring friendship. The reading begins at 1:30pm, so please arrive by 1:15pm if you’d like a chance to read. Please note that casting is not gender specific to the roles.

We’ve secured the Play Set from the Vancouver Public Library, which includes five copies for us to share. If you’d prefer your own copy, you can check one out through the Vancouver Public Library, or simply bring a copy from home if you have one.

ABOUT STEEL MAGNOLIAS

All the ladies who are “anybody” in Chinquapin, Louisiana come to Truvy’s beauty salon to have their hair done. Helped by her eager new assistant, Annelle (who is not sure whether or not she is still married), the outspoken, wise-cracking Truvy dispenses shampoo and free advice to the town’s rich curmudgeon, Ouiser, an eccentric millionaire, Miss Clairee, who has a raging sweet tooth; and the local social leader, M’Lynn, whose daughter, Shelby (the prettiest girl in town), is about to marry a “good ole boy.”

Filled with hilarious repartee and several acerbic verbal collisions, the comedy moves toward tragedy when, in the second act, the spunky Shelby risks her life to go through with a dangerous pregnancy. Confronted with the harshness of mortality, the others draw together to find strength – and love – in the wake of tragedy.

ABOUT ROBERT HARLING

Born in Dothan, Alabama, Robert Harling lived in several Southern towns before his family settled in Natchitoches, Louisiana when he was twelve. Upon his graduation from Northwestern University of Louisiana and Tulane Law School, rather than take the bar exam, he opted to become an actor in New York. After years of productive work as an actor in voice-overs and commercials, Harling was inspired to write the highly acclaimed stage play, Steel Magnolias which was based on events from his family life. To this day, Steel Magnolias continues to thrive in theatrical productions in over 20 languages throughout the world.

Reading Theatre is created for those with a passion for live theatre. A live play reading of iconic plays over the ages. All are welcome and encouraged — from the seasoned professional to the inquisitive amateur and everyone in between.

Show up and read, or listen to others read these incredible shows.  A short discussion may take place…or not.  This is an event led by the cast and audience.

Readers will be chosen just before the play reading begins and will be cast by those who show up and express an interest in being involved.  Some roles may be double cast.

This event is being led by Allan Morgan, Senior Artist in Residence and Vancouver theatre scene stalwart. We’d love to see you there!
