Hollywood’s embrace of Broadway bedazzlement goes back to the advent of sound films when the movies began to sing and dance. Critically acclaimed and audience pleasing musical theatre productions such as SHOW BOAT, GUYS AND DOLLS, MY FAIR LADY and THE SOUND OF MUSIC, among many others, made successful stage-to-screen transitions. This tradition continues well into the 21st century with recent titles such as IN THE HEIGHTS, director Steven Spielberg’s version of WEST SIDE STORY, DEAR EVAN HANSEN and WICKED, all getting the Hollywood treatment.
In this special presentation, classic film scholar Michael van den Bos raises the curtain and flips on the footlights for a rapturous revue of Broadway musicals adapted into motion picture razzmatazz. Featuring a curated collection of dazzling musical film clips and Michael’s colourful commentary, come experience Hollywood’s version of the Great White Way on the great big screen!
